SCHEDULING YOUR AUDITION:
It is 1969 and Memphis Lee's Hill District diner lies in a neighborhood in transition. The restaurant serves as a gathering place for a host of regulars: an elder who imparts wisdom from a local sage, an ex-con, a numbers runner, a resident intellectual, a laconic waitress, and a persistent man seeking his due. Part of Wilson’s American Century Cycle, Two Trains Running tells the stories of a neighborhood and a country on the brink of change.
- Memphis Lee - proud owner of the restaurant where the play is set, a migrant from the American South.
- Risa - a young woman who works at the restaurant.
- Sterling - young man from the neighborhood, recently released from prison
- Holloway - a community elder, he is described as "the seer and the knower"
- Wolf - a numbers runner, small-time gambler, and "town crier
- West - funeral director and longest-standing business owner in the community
- Hambone - he repeats one phrase in his search for justice
