Waste Management and Recycling

Waste management and recycling can be one of the hardest issues facing campus sustainability efforts. Very few materials are truly recyclable, and they must be empty, clean, and dry before disposal. And a bin of clean recyclables can be easily contaminated by careless disposal of dirty materials.

Sustainability efforts focus reducing the waste generated on campus by people and operations, limiting the use of materials that cannot be efficiently recycled (plastics), promoting recycling best practices, and supporting the purchase of sustainable products.

Empty, Clean and Dry

Be sure your recyclables are empty, clean and dry before you put them in the recycle bin. It suffices to simply rinse containers. They don't need to be sparkling clean, but there should not be much food residue.

Skip the Print

Before you print think twice about whether you really need that paper. When you do print, be sure to implement best practices like double-sided pages and single-spaced paragraphs. Instructors,students and staff should strive to use e-resources whenever possible to curb production of paper waste.

Recycling

IUN is dedicated to reducing the total waste produced by campus and diverting waste from landfills through recycling. We are working hard to implement best practices and innovative solutions. You can do your part by using refillable water bottles, recycling paper in designated bins, skipping single-use plastics, and through proper disposal of waste and recycling.
