Eligibility Requirements
- You must have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can complete the FAFSA online.
- Undergraduates in an eligible degree/certificate program must be enrolled in a total of 6 credit hours or more during the summer to receive summer aid. Undergraduates will not be packaged with aid until enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
- Graduates in an eligible degree/certificate program students must be enrolled in a total of 4 credit hours or more in the summer to receive summer aid. Graduate students will not be packaged with aid until enrolled in a minimum of 4 credit hours.
- Students must be making satisfactory academic progress in order to be eligible for summer aid.
Availability of Summer Aid
- Students who received Direct Loans and/or Pell Grants up to their full annual eligibility during the previous Academic Year (fall and spring terms) will not be eligible for Direct Loans and/or Pell Grants in the summer. Borrower eligibility for Direct Loans begins the following academic year usually with the fall term.
- Summer aid can be used to pay for any educationally-related expense incurred during your summer enrollment period; however aid will not be credited to your bursar account until all eligibility requirements are completed. Please see a Financial Aid Counselor prior to making any enrollment change as changes in enrollment may/will affect grant and loan eligibility.
The value of your Pell grant amount for the summer of 2022 will be based on the credit hours you are enrolled in as of the end of the day on May 22,2022.
If you are enrolled for Summer I only, the value of your Pell grant will be based on your enrollment as of May 22. If you add classes for Summer I after May 22, your Pell grant will not be increased.
If you are enrolled for Summer I and II, and add classes after May 22, your Pell grant will be based on your enrollment as of May 19 for both summer terms. Therefore, you should be sure to complete your registration prior to May 22 for both summer sessions.
If you are enrolled in Summer II only, the value of your Pell grant will be based on the credit hours as of the date of your initial enrollment for Summer Term II.Reasons why Pell may be decreased for the Summer 2022 (if eligible)
- Rules for unofficial withdrawals are in place. If you do not complete your course(s) due to non-attendance, your Pell grant may be reduced.
- If you register, then drop classes prior to the beginning of Session I or Session II, your Pell grant will be adjusted to match your enrollment.
- Return of Federal Title IV Funds Policy (R2T4) applies. If you completely withdraw and you do not “earn” the awarded federal financial aid, you may owe a refund to the Pell grant program.
If you have received Federal Work-Study (FWS) during the previous academic year, you may be eligible during the summer.
Once you have been awarded, check your award package for (FWS) Federal Work-Study and then contact Career Services about potential employment opportunities. Career Services will then work with your employer to finalize your eligibility for summer FWS and send you a written notice of your status.
If you do not see (FWS) Federal Work-Study as part of your award package, complete the cancellation/adjustment form or email your request to finaidnw@iu.edu for consideration for the award.

Important dates to remember for the Summer 2022
- The automatic “W” deadline is June 12 for Summer I and July 24 for Summer II.
Financial Aid for Study Abroad Programs Sponsored by Indiana University
The scholarships, grants, subsidized and unsubsidized loans that you receive from the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at Indiana University Northwest may be used to pay for study abroad.
Scholarships, loans, grants and fee courtesy benefits (for spouse, employee, and dependents) may be applied to study abroad programs administered by a campus of Indiana University. A Consortium Agreement must be signed by your academic advisor of the Indiana University campus that you are attending prior to your departure on a study abroad trip.
