All of the summer language courses are intensive, with 3 to 4 credits of Spanish. Our intensive approach allows students to complete a semester of university foreign language coursework in 3 weeks. You may combine these courses with any elective up to a maximum of 4 credits.
Each participant will be required to take 3-4 credit hours, choosing from the following courses:
USAC: Elementary Spanish I
Introduction to the language through the development of language skills and through structural analysis. The fundamentals of grammar (all verb tenses), vocabulary, and useful expressions are studied. The objective of these courses is to build reading, writing, listening, and above all, speaking skills. (4 credits)
USAC: Elementary Spanish II

USAC: Intermediate Spanish I
This course emphasize learning the structure of the Spanish language. Classes are divided into three components: grammar/vocabulary, conversation and reading/writing, each of which is related to the themes covered. A review of basic elements, such as the present tense, ser and estar, preterit and imperfect, etc is included. (3 credits)
USAC: Intermediate Spanish II
This class continues the learning of the structure of the Spanish language. Classes are divided into three components: grammar/vocabulary, conversation and reading/writing, each of which is related to the themes covered. This level is specifically orientated towards functional and social communication, oral as well as written. (3 credits)
USAC: Spanish Composition I
Classes revolve around compositions, which the student writes almost daily. Part of the class is used to correct the compositions or exercises that the student does outside of class. New advanced grammatical topics are also introduced and exercises reinforcing the use of that element are done in class. Also, part of the class is utilized for selected readings, discussion and vocabulary building. (3 credits)
USAC: Drawing Getxo / Bilbao
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing while using the city of Getxo/ Bilbao as a backdrop. The human figure, landscape, architecture, and abstract art will be explored with emphasis on creating form through observation, techniques of shading, composition and personal interpretation. Various black and white media such as pencil, charcoal and ink will be used as well as a color option. In addition to classes on campus, classes will be held in various points of the city so that students become familiar with Madrid´s museums, parks, special spots and its people. The course is suitable for beginners and non-beginners alike and is taught in English. (1 credit)
USAC: Advanced Spanish Language I
The objective of this class is to do a comprehensive revision of the most difficult grammatical points in Spanish. This will be presented through the use of theoretical and practical materials that permit the student to consolidate some of those complex grammatical aspects of the Spanish language that require frequent review and further development. Care will be taken, whenever possible, to focus on understanding and practicing their use in both the written and spoken forms of the language. (3 credits)
USAC: Spanish Stylistics
This class is set up as a continuation to the Composition courses. Just as in the Composition courses, the material for this class will be taken from assigned reading materials and from student writing assignments. The general objectives are to: improve students' understanding of the written word; improve students' expression through writing; and to characterize different types of journalistic, literary, and technical texts. The specific objectives are to develop and practice typical Spanish expressions, the most important vocabulary and linguistic structures for this level, idioms, synonyms and antonyms, the relationship and derivation of nouns, adjectives, and verbs, verbal periphrasis, and the most common proverbs and sayings. Taught in Spanish. (1-3 credits)
