Fulfilling dreams one generation at a time
The purpose of the Indiana University Northwest first-generation student’s club, GEN1, is to establish a support system for first-generation college students, undocumented students, and any others seeking assistance with the transition to college life. We aim to provide services, workshops, and friendships to people who can relate to the adversity of being a first-generation college student.
GOALS
- Provide a comfortable location for first-generation students to express thought.
- Encourage students to participate in on-campus events and volunteering opportunities.
- Offer advice and share information crucial to succeeding in a new environment.
Additionally, and most importantly, GEN1 strives to maintain a community where students can develop a sense of belonging. Coming from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, first-generation and working-class students may find it hard adjusting to IUN. As a club, we want to be present for students who may face these obstacles and help them overcome them. We hope that eventually the label First-Generation will stop being a source of limitations, but instead, a source of empowerment.
