ST and EM Permits must be purchased online through parking.iu.edu. Please contact Parking Services for all other permit requests.
A valid parking permit is required from Monday at 6:00AM through Thursday at 10:00PM. A permit is not required Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
Parking is prohibited at all times in reserved spaces, without proper permit; in “No Parking” areas; in a disabled or wheelchair space without proper University permit; in fire lanes, fire exits, or at any fire hydrant; blocking doorways; in loading zones; in spaces reserved for University vehicles; on lawns, sidewalks, crosswalks; in parking lot driveways; straddling painted lines; after exceeding time in limited time areas; in areas where the permit is not valid; over or adjacent to yellow lines or curbs; against the flow of traffic; in a manner creating a public safety or health hazard.
During the first week of classes, an exception is made so students and visitors can park in the areas signed “IUN Permit Parking” without and IUN Parking Permit. This time frame allows individuals to park without receiving a parking fine to obtain the appropriate permit from Parking Service. This exception does not include Faculty/Staff, Disability or Reserved.
The speed limit is 10 MPH in all surfaced lots. Backing into a space or parking against the flow of traffic is prohibited.
Pedestrians always have the right of way. Both pedestrians and vehicles must comply with all traffic signals.
Use of certain parking spaces or lots may be temporarily restricted to facilitate special events, construction, maintenance, or other unusual circumstances. Inability to park in these areas will not warrant a discount or refund of parking fees.
Lack of parking spaces in assigned permit zone, mechanical problems, inclement weather do not authorize a vehicle to park in a location without the appropriate permit for a specific zone or any non-designated parking area. A vehicle is not exempt from receiving a parking citation if the surrounding vehicles are in violation of the parking rules (including IU Service vehicles) or if the hazard lights are active.
Motorbikes, motorcycles, and motor scooters are subject to all regulations and must be operated only on streets designated for normal automobile use. A parking permit is required for motorcycles. Designated motorcycle areas should be used for parking.
Bicycles may not be chained or locked to undesignated university property or in areas prohibited by fire codes (doorways, corridors, stairways, fire exits, fire plugs, etc.). Bicycles may not be parked in spaces provided for motor vehicles.
Any accident involving a motor vehicle on university property must be reported to the University Police, (219) 980-6501, at the earliest possible moment.
Vehicles found on campus that are causing a safety hazard may be relocated or removed. A safety hazard is defined as, but not limited to, leaking gas or oil, emitting toxic fumes or unsecured. All costs and fines incurred are the responsibility of the vehicle owner.
During special events, persons with valid IU Northwest parking permits are allowed to park in permit lots without charge.
University parking lots are intended to provide short term parking for those conducting university business on campus. They are not intended to provide long-term parking or storage of a motor vehicle or other conveyance. Long-term storage is defined as a vehicle that has not moved locations for more than 2 days. Any affiliate of IU Northwest with a valid parking permit may obtain permission in advance from Parking Services to leave a vehicle longer than 2 days. Please note that any extended parking granted by Parking Services is at the Permit Holders risk. IU Northwest and Parking Services is not responsible for the vehicle while it is stationed on campus.
- An unmoved vehicle that does not have permission for long-term parking will receive a tow warning. The owner will have 48 hours to remove the vehicle from the premises or it will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Camping, living, or otherwise using one’s vehicle as a residence is not permitted on campus. Trailers, campers, boats, or similar conveyances may not be parked for storage on university property. Authorization must be obtained from Parking Services to park a vehicle on university property overnight. Vehicles that are determined to be abandoned on university property will be towed and disposed of according to Indiana State Law.
- It is the vehicles owner’s responsibility to obtain a Long-Term permit from Parking Services. Improper display of a permit can result in the issuing of a citation or vehicle impoundment.
