Mission: Preserve. Restore. Educate. Shirley Heinze Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in 1981 as a charitable trust to preserve and protect the unique ecosystems of the Indiana Dunes region.
Shirley Heinze Land Trust has been protecting natural land in the southern Lake Michigan watershed since 1981. It manages nearly 1,300 acres in Lake, Porter, and La Porte Counties.

NIRMI (Northwest Indiana Restoration Monitoring Inventory) seeks to facilitate and administer the long-term monitoring of ecological restorations in the greater Calumet Region of northwest Indiana, northeast Illinois, and southwest Michigan. We fuse standardized techniques for monitoring ecosystems (e.g. sampling and identification of plant species) with data management and statistical evaluation to compose and maintain a web-based, open-access, real-time inventory of restoration progress in the Calumet region.

The USGS is uniquely positioned to conduct coastal ecosystem research on many scales (e.g., microbial analysis to landscape development) because as an agency our research capabilities extend from the headwaters of watersheds to the deepest habitats in the Great Lakes. The Center has both biological expertise and the ability to create teams that include physical scientists with specialized knowledge and expertise. Center research will occur across multiple scales and disciplines and explore the connectivity between the lakes and between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem processes in a dynamic environment.
