Prohibited discrimination is treating someone differently based on membership in a protected class, or any other classification protected by law, in matters of admissions, employment, education, or in the programs or activities of the university.
Prohibited harassment is verbal or physical conduct, or conduct using technology, directed toward someone because of membership in a protected class (or a perception that someone is a member of a protected class) that has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with the person’s access to education or work, or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment or academic experience.

What is a reasonable accommodation?
A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a job, an academic setting, or a work environment that enables a person with a disability to apply for a job, perform essential job functions, participate in academic programs, or enjoy equal access to workplace and educational benefits.

Learn how your decision to report an incident can help make a safer campus for everyone
A bias incident is any conduct, speech, or expression, motivated in whole or in part by bias or prejudice meant to intimidate, demean, mock, degrade, marginalize, or threaten individuals or groups based on that individual or group's actual or perceived identities.
Some examples of bias incidents are using racial slurs, creating derogatory images, mocking someone's cultural practice, or displaying hateful symbols, whereas discrimination and harassment are the unfair treatment or denial of opportunities based on protected characteristics. Bias incidents don’t always rise to the level of discrimination or harassment, but discrimination and harassment are always motivated by bias.
If you have experienced, witnessed, or been made aware of a bias incident, you can submit a report to alert the university. Reporting an incident allows IU to support those impacted and take steps to prevent future incidents.
Report a bias incidentRomantic or sexual relationships between students and faculty or staff who have any responsibility for the student's education or experiences are prohibited, regardless of consent or apparent consent. IU aims to ensure that all students avoid situations where power differences or conflicts of interest could cause problems or seem unfair.
